Why screenshots go soft

A screenshot starts as an exact copy of what was on screen, so it begins perfect. Damage comes later: messaging apps re-encode it as a JPEG, documents scale it to fit a column, and a capture from a browser at less than 100% zoom was already resampled before it was saved.

Text suffers most, because letterforms are built from thin high-contrast strokes and those are the first thing both resizing and compression discard.

Getting the best result

Use the largest copy you have. Enhancing a screenshot that was already shrunk gives the model less to work with than starting from the original capture, so it is worth going back to the source if you still have it.

Small screenshots do best. Under about 1.4 megapixels — roughly 1400 x 1000 — the reconstruction model runs and the improvement is obvious. A full-screen capture from a modern phone or laptop is several times that, so it gets artifact removal and edge work at its original size instead, which is a real but much subtler improvement.

Your image stays on your device

PhotoRise has no upload endpoint. The enhancement model is downloaded to your browser once and every pixel is processed in a worker inside this tab, so your image is never transmitted anywhere, never written to a server, and never seen by anyone. Close the tab and nothing remains.

Two numbers are counted so the project can show how much it is used: that a page was opened, and that an enhancement finished. Both are increments on a shared counter with no cookie, identifier or address attached, and nothing about your image is included. See exactly what is counted.

Questions

Can you make blurry text readable again?

Sometimes. If the strokes are still there but soft, reconstruction sharpens them and text becomes easier to read. If the text was reduced to a grey smear, the letterforms are genuinely gone and no tool can recover them — treat any product that claims otherwise with suspicion.

Why does my phone screenshot barely change?

A modern phone screenshot is around 3 megapixels, which is past the size the reconstruction model can process on a phone in reasonable time. Those get artifact removal and edge refinement at the original size, a genuine improvement but a subtle one. Look at the result in the actual-size view, where it is visible.

Does it work on screenshots of text and code?

Yes, and they are among the best cases, because text is high-contrast structure with a strong regular shape. Sharpening is thresholded so it lifts letterforms without ringing around them.
